Layers are usually used to create more volume, actually, because if it is long and one layered, you hair appears limp.

You can ask a hairdresser to actually thin your hair, OR just the ends. I have HUGE hair, and my hairdresser thinned the ends of my hair and my hair is mroe controllable.

the first person to anwer is right: DO NOT BLOW DRY!!! That creates soooo much volume. Also, you may want to try extra hold mousse for curly hair, or hairspray/shine/frizz-ease cream for your hair if it is straight. Often, hair just looks big because it is "poofy" or frizzy... these things help controll frizz and poof!

and dont put heat on your hair at all . rince hair in cold water when you wash it and get it trimmed regularly.

Applying layers also helps get rid of split ends, but getting layers will definitely not thin out your hair. Applying layers is usually used to add intense volume and and just create a new look. Also by finding a way to thin out your hair will eventually dry your hair and your hair strands will gradually fall off. This does not help your hair and your hair will start to lack in essential oils and fibers that your hair needs to retain shine for its structure. If you're trying to achieve a sleek-hair look, you could just apply heat with a straightening iron and your look will look very nice just with the hair length that you have. I just don't agree with thinning out your hair. I would give layers to your hair and straighten it and you'll have an even more beautiful look than what you would have thought.
